Festa Italiana celebrates a taste of Italy with this two-day community event having become a Thunder Bay tradition. Held on the Canadian long weekend in August, this long running festival offers fantastic Italian food and entertainment.
Thunder Bay has a large population of Italian heritage with the Italian Cultural Centre on Algoma Street the focal point of this annual celebration held on the Sunday and Monday of the first weekend in August. The street is blocked off to host this unique festival to showcase the food, music and culture of Italy.
The parking lot at the Italian Culture Centre is transformed into a large festival area coming alive with an entertainment stage, food booths and a beer gardens, International and local Italian performers are featured on the outdoor stage with heritage and art displays set up in the main building of the cultural centre.
The food booths remain one of the main ingredients that have made this festival a highlight of the summer for 25 years. People lineup to enjoy home-cooked, traditional Italian food like brushetta, gnocchi, lasagna, ravioli and other Mediterranean delights at the various food booths.
Fireworks close off each night of this cultural celebration at 11 p.m. and as an added bonus people can purchase tickets for the draw to take place during closing ceremonies on Monday night where you could win a trip for two to Italy.
